About Ball Physics

What you don't see
decides the game.

Ball Physics is an independent football project. One Touch is the released track that gives the game's thinking a voice; Read the Game is the learning programme built around it.

Both are early. The programme is at pilot-development stage and its questions are still open. This page sets out what Ball Physics is, what it is not, and what it needs before anything is delivered.

Why girls and young women

Contribution is bigger than the ball.

Football usually counts

  • having the ball
  • scoring
  • being the fastest player
  • being the strongest player
  • being the most technically confident player

A player can also change the game by

  • scanning
  • anticipating
  • creating space
  • moving a defender
  • communicating
  • supporting a teammate
  • opening a passing lane
  • influencing what happens next

The purpose of Ball Physics is to make those less visible contributions easier to recognise.

Why women & girls?

More ways
to matter in the game.

Ball Physics is particularly interested in what this idea could mean for girls and women.

Not every young person entering football sees herself as the quickest player, the strongest player, the goalscorer or the most confident player on the ball.

But football depends on far more than those visible moments.

  • A player can create the goal without scoring it.
  • She can create space without receiving the pass.
  • She can move a defender without touching the ball.
  • She can see the next action before it happens.
  • She can communicate information that changes a teammate's decision.

Read the Game is designed to make those contributions visible.

If more girls can recognise how they already contribute, could more of them feel that football has a place for them?

We don't know yet.
That's part of what we want to test.

How it fits together

  1. Ball PhysicsThe idea

    Make invisible football intelligence visible.

  2. One TouchThe cultural hook

Women voice the intelligence of the game.

  3. Read the GameThe intervention

Help girls notice, test and express their football intelligence.

  4. PilotThe question

Could this create another way into — and through — football?

About Ball Physics

A QueenQong
project.

Ball Physics is a QueenQong project exploring the invisible intelligence of football.

QueenQong puts women at the centre of the story. In Ball Physics, that means treating women as players, thinkers, decision-makers and experts in the game.

The project asks whether making more forms of football contribution visible — scanning, anticipation, creating space, influencing opponents, communication and off-ball movement — could help more girls and women recognise the value they bring to the game.

I don't need the ball to change the game.

One Touch gives that idea a voice.

Read the Game turns it into something players can experience.

The programme is currently at pilot-development stage. We want to test the idea with players, coaches and appropriate delivery and evaluation partners rather than assume that it works.

What Ball Physics is not

Clear about where we are.

Not a charity

Ball Physics is currently an independent personal project.

Not an accredited programme

Read the Game is a prototype intended to be tested and refined with appropriate partners.

Not a substitute for coaching

The programme is intended to complement existing football provision and would be developed with coaches and delivery partners.

Not claiming proven impact

Confidence, enjoyment, belonging, player voice and continued participation are potential outcomes to investigate — not claims already established.

Working with young people

Partnership before delivery.

Ball Physics is not proposing to bypass the organisations already responsible for young people's sport and education.

Any pilot involving children or young people would be developed and delivered with appropriate partners and subject to the safeguarding, consent, governance, insurance and evaluation arrangements required for that setting.

The idea can be personal.
The delivery must be professional.
